WHERE THE HECK!?!?

Gosh it has been forever! When I thought about writing this blog I was sitting in my great little house in East Van looking out the window on yet another rainy day in Vancouver. Our house was great but really needed a makeover hence looking and dreaming of design inspiration. We decided to move forward and called a designer/contractor to come in for a consult as there were walls that needed to come down and rewiring to be done. The day before he came our lives changed as did about 1500 other employees of the video game industry in Vancouver and my hubby lost his job. The contractor was cancelled and we hunkered down to figure out what our next move was. 4 months later our lives quickly changed and we were on a plane to Singapore as my hubby got his dream job over here in asia running a video game department. I had to quit my job and take on the new role of getting to know this new city. I know I should have written about it but he does a pretty good job of keeping the world up to date with pictures and stories of our adventures if you are interested (http://www.corsiworld.blogspot.com/). Besides that not so many rainy days here.

So I am thinking of starting this all over again. Should I start a new blog or continue with this one??? Stay tuned, but don't hold your breath!

Opposite of Home

I am a little bummed out as I will be missing my design class tomorrow as I am being sent out to Prince George for work tomorrow night. Where the heck is Prince George? Well it is the center of BC, even though many of us southerners refer to it as "up north".

Thursday I will be up before the sun to complete a site inspection 2 hours into the bush outside PG. Now while PG has a pretty bad rep here in BC for being a stinky pulp mill town of days gone by, it is still quite beautiful territory. This is what I look like when out on a site visit...

However since there is about 5 feet of snow and the current temperature there is expected to be -2 degrees c.and they have called for more snow I will look more like this..

So instead of being inspired by my class I am hoping that the great outdoors will work some restorative magic. Maybe a little rustic inspiration???

Living the Blog Name

Today I am living the name. It is raining here in Vancouver, and I am wishing I was elsewhere. Say in a Tuscan vineyard when the clouds are parting after a rain and there is the fresh smell of wet earth...

I have been doing some introspective exploration thanks to an awesome book Style Statement by Carrie McCarthy and Danielle LaPorte. This book is about finding your personal style statement that identifies you and your outlook on life and how to use that to carry yourself through life decisions and remaining true to the real you. I came across this while reading the design blog of Patricia Grey, my favorite local interior designer, who posted a quote by the girls on The Divine Law of the Great Chair.

The first question was Where Do You Feel Most At Home? Initial response: Near the water, ocean, lake, river, doesn't matter which. Vancouver works well for that as anytime I can go out and I am 5 minutes from the ocean, I can see the inlet from my bedroom.

Thinking of that feeling of home makes me think of time snuggling on the couch with the beasts. However I also remember that feeling of being home when I arrived in Ostia and Venice in Italy.

Since I have the ocean, and the beasts, how can I bring in the feelings of Italy into the house without trying to make it "Tuscan Style" that overdone, italian villa style that i see in so many magazine? This is the challenge. I think for me (and Gio) the best would be to create a westcoast and italian blend. With that decision, I dove into the world wide web for some photographic inspiration. Now, while I realize this will be a search for the bits and pieces and, most preferably, things from our travels that will come together to create this effect, it was proving to be more tricky to find inspirational photos of Italian rooms that were not all over the top Venetian or tuscan styled. What I realized that I mostly identify with in terms of italian living are the kitchens and eating areas. Italian life revolves around eating it is difficult to find anything to do with any other room of the house but the kitchen!!! So I will start there...

Yellow

It is the New Year and I have been very delinquent in my blogging. However it is still January and I can make up for that, as is the way with new years and the opportunity to start afresh.

I started a design class, Introduction to Design through the Vancouver School Board Continuing Education program. Though it is a simple program it has proven to be very fun and interesting. During the first class we discussed the most important thing to identify first when designing a room: PURPOSE! Answering who will use it and how will it be used will help you to determine the type of furniture, lighting and layout that will make the most of any room. Seems obvious doesn't it?

Next up was how a room makes you feel. What is your first emotional reaction when looking at the room. To do this we simply looked at picture of rooms and identified how the room made us feel before our brains switched in to whether we mentally appreciated the design or identified if it was "my style". It was interesting that quite a few in the class who had a more difficult time with it. It was a very interesting exercise to discover that I was feeling good/relaxed/calmed/energized in some rooms that had decor that really wasn't my style but I could identify the mood created by the design.

Try it, I found some awesome rooms online, in yellow. As I am getting ready to head out of this white and grey winter on this sunny saturday I am loving the yellow room design. These examples are all different styles but are so fresh and full of life. I would love one of each for my home, my chalet in the mountains and my cottage on the beach.. oh if only.

winter update

Well it has been a while since I have posted anything, what with the holidays, seeing family and friends, some in from out of town life has been pretty hectic. All the snowfall was just too awesome and here at Awesometown we took full advantage of being stuck in the snow with hikes in full snow gear up to Commercial Drive, baking days, drinking days and snowball fights!

I think I am a little fascinated by the returning trend of wallpaper. What better way to create your own unique look on a feature wall or even a whole room then by creating your own wallpaper and supporting a local company?? Interested?? Check out ROLL OUT! located right here in Vancouver.

MURALS & FLOWERS OH MY!!!

Well it was a great weekend! Kind of over cast and grey but nice enough for a couple of walks with the beasts and Gio as well as some creative time spent planning and dreaming of home renovations. There is always what I want to do versus what is financially responsible and realistic for the market. mm big dreams of creating my own wallpaper from a favorite photo and applying that to the new closet doors that have yet to be built for the closet that remains to be created in the bedroom. You see how I like to jump ahead a bit. Sort of like what you see here: MURALS YOUR WAY or THE DREAM SCENE.

Anyway since we are now just beginning the planning phase of our home renos, and I was not ready for changing all the muddy walls to color just yet I instead went to my favorite little flower store to get myself a lovely bunch of flowers to brighten the room. People, if you are interested in giving yourself or someone else a great bouquet at reasonable prices I think the Flower Box on Charles ave, just off Commercial drive, is the place.

The staff is soooo friendly and helpful and are ready to create for you an inspiring bouquet at any given moment. You just name your price, style and color scheme or bring in a vase you like and in 10 minutes you are walking out with a gorgeous piece of floral art!! However if you are in an indecisive mode and really just want some color and don't want to wait, like me on saturday, you can pick up a ready made bouquet for 5-30 dollars! While I was there a lady came in as she wanted an flower for her hair for some event she was going to and the staff member helped her select the flower and then prepared it with the appropriate wiring so she could place it securely in her hair later that night. Great idea! Well I have never been disappointed here and if you are in the market to make yourself or someone smile then check out the Flower Box!

WHY BLOG??

I decided that today was the day I will start posting all of the lovely things that my little heart desires.

I have been watching others do this for a while now and have decided that it is high time I got myself in the game. When you are working in the science industry but are a creative person you can begin to feel a little stifled. Don't get me wrong, there are loads of ways to be creative with what I do, you can pick line colors on maps and select photos for reports, and come up with creative ways of explaining how you are spending your clients money, but these are not quite the kind of creative output that I am looking for.

In an attempt to remedy that, and as a bit of self discovery, I have found myself of late longingly looking at websites and blogs other people have been creating to see what they are writing about and what is inspiring to me. I have found myself following mostly design sites, inspired by the amazing environments they are creating in homes and offices and anywhere really, as well as artists designing clothing, jewelry, housewares, and photographers creating unbelievable memories for events and families. Some bring awareness to causes, and some are just a nice place to visit and take the mind away from the day to day.

Looking at others sites of lovely things, it made me realize that I too knew of great beautiful people, places, and things that might make someone else smile. So lets try this out shall we.......
